Hello! Welcome to third grade!! Starting the school year on the right foot includes establishing classroom rules that will enable a positive community of learners. I have involved the students in establishing their classroom rules and expectations. I allow the students to be a part of this brainstorming because I want them to know they are responsible for their behavior choices. In the classroom, students are encouraged to practice kindness, respectfulness, responsibility, and peacefulness. We have spent the first week discussing classroom rules/expectations and what they “look like” and “sound like.”
Troy Hofer’s school expectations are:
1. Be Respectful
2. Be Responsible
3. Be Safe
4. Be Kind
Star Behavior Management Plan
As many of you may remember, Hofer has a school-wide behavior management plan. In the younger grades, the system is called “We’ve BEAN Good.” In this system, students move their “beans” up and down a ten point number line that is displayed in the classroom based on the decisions and choices they make during the day. When students make good choices, they move their beans up on the number line (with a maximum of 10) and when they make choices that could be better, they move their beans down on the number line (with a minimum of 1). In third grade, the transition is made to a “Star” reward system. Here’s how it works:
We are a team working together to make school a positive environment where your child wants to take risks to do his/her best each and every day. It is my hope this behavior management program will assist in doing just that!
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at school via email at [email protected] or call me at school.

In third grade, the transition is made to a “Star” reward system. Here’s how it works:
- Each student is assigned a “star” with their student number on it. Your child’s star moves along a number scale, 1 through 10. All students begin on #3.
- When your child makes good choices and is following classroom expectations, he/she will move his/her star up a number, increasing their position on the scale (reinforcing the positive behavior we want students to model). I say, “Star up!”
- When your child reaches #10, he/she will be awarded a key. (‘Hofer Keys’ is a school-wide behavior incentive. Students receive keys when they exhibit respectful, responsible, or peaceful behavior. Keys are earned, collected, and exchanged for fun prizes.)
- If a child makes a poor choice or is not following classroom expectations, he/she will be asked to move their star back a number, moving further away from #10. I say, “Star down.” As soon as the child is back on track they move their star forward again.
- Parent Contact will be made if there was something that occurred at school that needs to be discussed.
We are a team working together to make school a positive environment where your child wants to take risks to do his/her best each and every day. It is my hope this behavior management program will assist in doing just that!
